Dobermans Go To War
During both World Wars, Dobermans were treated quite harshly. If they weren't inhumanly put to sleep or starved to death, they were conscripted to war. Their duties consisted of mainly being messenger dogs, mercy dogs, guard dogs, and delivery dogs. They were smaller and faster than humans which made them able to withstand harsher environments and more maneuverable to navigate through trenches and jump over barbed wire obstacles.
Among the many dangerous jobs these animals had, one of the most commendable was being a mercy rescue dog. These dogs were trained to locate lost soldiers that were wounded on the battle field and unable to move themselves. They would venture out into no-mans land, putting themselves in the line of fire, and drag the soldier to safety. Being such an important asset for soldier safety and communication, the Dobermans were prime target for enemy fire; this meaning many dogs were killed and were not able to return home.
